Over at the Daily Mail (whose website, I understand, has leapfrogged those of numerous hitherto more successful newspapers to become the number 1 paper site in the UK), Claire Ellicott has a story about the numerous US politicians and media outlets opposing Barack Obama's healthcare plans on the basis that, well, it's a lot like our NHS.
Please note that that article is being updated on a pretty much rolling basis (e.g. it now contains a response from Stephen Hawking defending the NHS, which does not appear in the print version) so content is changing rapidly there.
In a related piece on the same site, Jenny Hope provides some interesting figures:
£1.2 billion the amount spent annually on administrators and clerical staff at NHS PCTs
to which one should add
£139 million the amount spent annually on management consultants by the NHS
which compare unfavourably with
£700 million the amount spent annually by the NHS on anti-cancer drugs, with some patients denied the treatment they need.
