Former Labour councillor Ben Summerskill and Chief Executive of gay rights charity Stonewall (a major beneficiary of Lottery and taxpayers' money) has launched an attack on Roger Helmer MEP after the latter worried on his blog about people accusing others of homophobia. Helmer's blog was perfectly reasonable but rather than pursuing a grown up engagement with Roger (as Iain Dale did) Mr Summerskill says Mr Helmer "bares his fangs". Moving beyond the issue of homosexuality Mr Summerskill attacks him as "twitchingly Europhobic."
One of the problems any Conservative government will inherit is that the British establishment is stuffed full of partisan Labour-ites like Mr Summerskill who are readier to play politics than advance the cause for which they were ostensibly appointed. Politically dominant for two decades (I'd say charities, corporate affairs companies etc have been preferring Labour appointees since about 1990 when they first decided Labour was about to win power) the Labour Party may lose office next year but their people will still be active throughout the high-spending quangocracy and beyond. Only yesterday I Twittered how the defeated Labour leader of Lancashire County Council has picked up a £23,000 job - on a four year contract - as Chairman of the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.
After May next year Labour will (hopefully) be out of elected national office but Harding, Summerskill and thousands more will still be in power.
