The photo was kindly taken by Melissa O'Sullivan at a recent private dinner hosted by John O'Sullivan to celebrate Lady Thatcher's coming to power. I was able to tell the great lady how I became a Tory because of her decision to face down the unilateralists of CND.
My teacher had told me that nuclear weapons were evil and that the Tory government was wrong to deploy them. My military dad had already introduced me to the idea of deterrence and armed with his arguments and those of the Iron Lady I was able to argue back in class. The whole Greenham Common saga was the principal reason why I became a Conservative when I did. Aged eleven.
How did you become a Conservative? What is your earliest political memory?
