Fraser Nelson has just posted on Coffee House about how Ken Clarke was cheered by colleagues as if he were a by-election victor when he took his seat alongside George Osborne on the front bench this afternoon.
But he goes on to say that "it was his first time, ever, on an opposition front bench".
Sorry, Fraser, but having donned my political geek hat to check some facts, I can confirm that this is not actually the case.
Apart from being an opposition spokesman throughout the 1974-79 Parliament, he did in fact speak from the Despatch Box on the Opposition front bench just five years ago this week. It under Michael Howard's leadership when he was one of the council of "wise men" advisng the leader and he spoke to an opposition day motion supporting the case for a civil service bill. You can read his speech in Hansard here.
