We may not have all the facts, but if the headlines in the Daily Mail are true, the grandparents aged 46 and 59 who have been told they are too old to adopt their grandchildren are victims of the most ludicrous and detrimental application of social services regulations [please tell me it's not the law!]. The list of common sense objections to this decision should be too obvious to state.... many natural mothers have babies in their 40's [Cherie Blair at 45]....the grandmother's diabetes is chronic condition handled by thousands of mothers alongside child-rearing....housing children with extended family should be the priority....the children need security and the vast majority of gay couples split within 6 years [a fact not a prejudice] ....grandparents across the UK are routinely involved in grandchild care.... etc etc etc
Having had a heroin-addict mother [according to the 6am BBC news but not yet on website] these children will already have had a hugely traumatic start to their lives. All the evidence points to the grandparents wanting the best for their grandchildren, their being the best source of love and continuity yet having been persuaded by the authorities that they weren't good enough. Chaos theory seems to have taken over Edinburgh Social Services.
