Here is Reuters discussing the Canadian elections back in July, when the parties were pretty much neck and neck in the polls:
"Elections to fill three seats in Canada's House of Commons will be held on Sept. 8 with the major issue likely to be the opposition Liberal Party's proposal to introduce a carbon tax."
Since then the Canadian Conservatives have run a hard hitting campaign attacking Stephane Dion's "tax on everything". ConservativeInternational.com has posted some of the adverts. The WillYouBeTricked.ca website the party set up is still online.
In the end, the Canadian Conservatives wound up with a twelve per cent lead in the popular vote, and able to set up a stronger minority government than they had before. TaxPayers' Alliance polling has shown that the public are cynical about green taxes, 74% think politicians are not serious about the environment but use green taxes to raise revenue, and our research (PDF) has shown that further green taxes cannot be justified on Pigovian grounds. The election in Canada confirms that green taxes are a political liability.
