I'm waiting for the big Sarah Palin speech and there are some very moving TV images of John McCain hugging Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter Bristol. He's also shown talking to Bristol's boyfriend (soon-to-be husband) while touching his arm.
These photographs are very important for the Republicans. The GOP may be the party of traditional values but that doesn't mean it can't also be the party of compassion and families-that-stick-together-in-tough-times. John McCain is very important for the Republican Party. He has already shown his compassion on immigration and his opposition to torture. With Sarah Palin he must also emphasise his opposition to congressional pork and big lobbyists. That is the task he and his VP pick must achieve during the final two evenings of the Convention. They must as Steve Hilton might say, decontaminate the GOP brand.
PS James Forsyth is worried that Sarah Palin hasn't been doing any big TV interviews. Governor Palin certainly must 'Meet The Press' idc but one of the reasons why tonight's looming speech is such a big deal is that she remains a mystery. Her speech tonight will be watched by many more millions because of the building suspense.
