Remember that smugness across European capitals, as Kosovo was wrenched from Serbia? I remember thinking at the time, that whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation, the wind had probably been sown and it would all end in tears. So now looks to be the case. While we are all meant to be choking on Chinese pollution, we are distracted by the whirlwind being reaped in Georgia.
People said it would happen and now it looks like it has. What's my point? Ethical foreign policy is for dummies. In matters of nationhood and self determination, the world should be slow to pick apart existing nations without carefully thinking through the likely outcomes. A hot war in Georgia was always seen as a likely outcome and now its started. Is the self determination of Kosovo worth the blood price that may now be paid? I for one am not convinced and worry that this is just the sort of bog up we can expect to see more of with the EU dabbling in foreign policy.
