Congratulations to David Cameron for seizing the initiative and announcing plans to fly to Tbilisi tomorrow morning for meetings with Georgian political leaders. The rapid, tough and resolute statements that the Conservative Party have issued throughout the conflict have done a tremendous amount to strengthen the party's foreign policy credentials.
Whilst I'm not usually given to praising Tony Blair, does anyone else think the United Kingdom would have taken such an embarrassingly low profile in Georgian crisis negotiations on his watch? I struggle to recall The Clunking Fist issuing even a single memorable public statement on the conflict during the past seven days.
The contrast between Brown and President Sarkozy couldn't be starker. As Brown's Britain fades into relative obscurity on the international stage, Sarkozy has arguably led France into its most influential position as a foreign policy actor for many years.
