Another day, another partisan appointment. This time it's Sir Bill Callaghan who is appointed chair(man) of the Legal Services Commission. A denizen of quanorama city, Callaghan was previously chair(man) of the Health & Safety Commission, which he joined after a long career with our old friends at the TUC. Callaghan replaces Sir Michael Bichard, a career civil servant who led the inquiry into the Soham murders.
The Government press release tells us the appointment was made on the basis of merit. Hmmm. For them, the key merit is likely to be someone who will not give the Government a hard time over the disaster that is legal aid, be suitably servile and a complete nightmare following a change of Government (vide the London Assembly following Boris' victory). Callaghan is just one of a long string of not terribly independent people inhabiting quangoland.
Our implementation team will need to be competent, effective and high grade to deal with this challenge. What do Centre Right readers think about all this quango packing and the aims and approach of a Conservative Government in tackling it?
