I love plastic bags. I remember as a little boy, going shopping and bringing things back in paper bags, that ripped and would collapse if it rained or if something leaked into them. Plastic bags keep my shopping dry, and don't rip. They can be constructed with secure handles. There is a bit of a challenge in opening them at the checkout, to be sure, but once in play, they are wonderful.
Once I get them home, they have myriad further uses. I put my rubbish in them. I use them to wrap dirty nappies. When I go to the gym or the swimming pool, I put my wet kit into a plastic bag. If I go abroad, I wrap my toothbrush and toothpaste in my suitcase inside a plastic bag. They seal what I don't want to get wet and dirty from what already is wet and dirty. They are a marvel of the modern age.
I know of no-one who does not use plastic bags much as I do (nappies aside). I used to get all my plastic bags free with my shopping, before their multiple re-uses that I mentioned. Now I have to pay perhaps 3p for each one. That's fine; I don't mind paying. But anyone thinking that means I might make less use of plastic bags is deluded. I make so many uses of plastic bags that I often run out. My demand is for more, not fewer, and now I can buy them, I shall feel less inhibited at the counter. Plastic bags - Your praises I sing!
