It would be an overstatement to say the UN Human Rights Council is a sick joke: it's really not that funny.
There is no requirement that member states who sit on the Human Rights Council actually respect human rights - even nations sanctioned by the UN Security Council for human rights abuses have the same rights as any other member. Hence in just the last two years, Algeria, China, Cuba, Egypt, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia have all been elected to the body. There are no prizes for guessing which one country this foul institution has singled out above all others for alleged human rights abuses.
But we're next. The Council's latest report focuses on Britain's failings on human rights, and recommends we need to scrap the monarchy and adopt a written constitution if we want to do better. I humbly suggest we reject the UN's constitutional proposal as fiercely as the Irish have today rejected the EU's constitutional proposal.
