Peter, I guess my basic assumption is that anything which limits human potential, as well as being a bad thing in itself, will one way or another also impact on the taxpayer. Personally, I'm more interested in the human costs than the financial costs, but there are audience issues here.
I certainly take your point – and Jill's – on the 'just-do-something' school of policy making. However, I think you're both missing something here, which is that our politicians aren't just policy-makers, they are also leaders. In that role, I believe that they can and should play their part in shaping the culture and conscience of a nation.
But now I've gone and opened another can of worms.
