John Redwood has compiled an excellent list of means by which the growth in public spending can be brought under control. My favourite five suggestions:
- A freeze on civil service and quango recruitment except in special cases. All posts can be filled from within the swollen ranks of the public sector.
- Review all computerisation projects with a view to coming up with total savings of at least 20%.
- Cancel large projects like the ID scheme.
- Reduce the public sector's advertising and communications budget by 20%. That's Mr Redwood's suggested cut. Why not 50%?
- Green measures throughout Government to reduce energy and other forms of wastage.
