I am sorry to hear of the stressful nature of the expulsion of Mr. Hannan from the European People’s Party, as I am positive he takes his duties as seriously as Roger Helmer MEP also sitting outside the EPP. However, I am glad of the implications, since I hope this is the future of things to come – why don’t all the Conservative MEPs make a clear secondary reference to EP procedures as Nazi-like laws? It will save Mr. Cameron having to dither about what to do with all the Conservative MEPs who remain there – they can all make a sharp exit.
Neither should Dan Hannan be too bothered by it all. The truth is that the European institutions are run by a swarm of officials who have no idea of how to approach a diversity of opinion, of being subject to scrutiny or of any normal democratic obligations. It doesn’t matter if it is Poettering raging at our Brussels dissenters or Wallstrom raging at a Westminster scrutiny panel, most EU officials/politicians simply do not understand the process of scrutiny and dissent (or the reasons for them). The aggressive enforcement of the Lisbon Treaty and the previous Treaties in the UK and throughout Europe without any sign of a referendum proves their delusional and anti-democratic stance. The words of Hannan seem to have been well received in Britain. A job well done.
