I'm so relieved that Conway has lost the Whip, albeit belatedly. There was a lot of talk of tactics in relation to Labour's woes over dodgy finances but surely it provided a tactical opportunity to make Brown look like a ditherer by contrasting his feet-dragging over Hain with Cameron's decisive action over Conway?
The dithering line was used in a question to Cameron after the CDU meeting, and it stung a little. Cameron's answer was that it's normally for the Parliamentary authorities to do the punishing and that he reflected on it overnight. The former doesn't explain the 24hr delay because nothing has changed in that respect, the latter hardly deflects the ditherer barb.
I've seen several journalists carrying around a green document entitled "The conduct of Mr Derek Conway" today. This had to be killed before Labour's line that all parties are falling short of on finances got too much credence.
I completely agree with Alex's analysis, this was about right and wrong. I've never seen ConservativeHome commenters so united. If more MPs are found to be guilty of the same thing, as Robert Winnett's explanation of how this was found out suggests could happen, they too should lose the Whip.
