A powerful piece by Tom Utley in the Daily Mail today criticising the latest government assault on the little that's left of choice and selection for parents and schools. Recently, matters have actually just got worse, because those who surely know better, like Dr Anthony Seldon, are going native. Is it really so wrong to want the best you can afford for your children and for schools to make an informed decision about who they take on?
Britain's educational establishment has long lost the plot. Education today is all about the pursuit of social policy, obscure yet powerful quangos carving out self-serving niches and schools wasting administrative time complying with the latest Stalinist Dictats from Whitehall.
The future of education - like the economy - is evolutionary flexibility. That means vouchers, politicians stepping back and schools and parents taking charge at the lowest possible level. Given free reign, the UK could have an education industry at least as powerful and beneficial to the economy and our society as the City.
And we will all be winners for that.
