In his interview in today's Times, David Cameron makes several important points. The one which struck me most is the contrast between the Shadow Cabinet and the Cabinet. William Hague versus David Miliband (a slight improvement on predecessors Margaret Beckett and Jack Straw); David Davis versus Jacqui Smith (who admits she won't go out at night on foot in Kensington, let alone Hackney); George Osborne versus Alistair Darling (Mr Invisible) ... and we could go on.
The Shadow Cabinet is one which represents what Britain can and should be: first-rate, intellectually sharp, energised, dynamic, creative, imaginative, principled, bold. The Cabinet represents what Britain under this Government has become: lacklustre, mediocre, second-rate, grimy, sleezey, grey, dull, incompetent, delayed, absurd and plain stupid. And if ministers are like that, it's no surprise civil servants and bureaucrats follow. Ministers set the tone, pace, style and substance. We have third-rate ministers and fifth-rate bureaucrats. Let's have the A-team in soon, to sort out the mess the C-team has left us in.
