Reading through the Lords Hansard for last Thursday, I was charmed by this exchange, in relation to (Conservative peer) Baroness Trumpington:
"The Chairman of Committees: My Lords, on behalf of the whole House, I wish the noble Baroness a very happy birthday.
Noble Lords: Hear, hear!"
That is terribly civilised.
Born in 1922, Baroness Trumpington worked in Naval Intelligence at Bletchley Park during the Second World War. She was Mayor of Cambridge, and was a minister of state at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. In 2005 she was made a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. As a Baroness-in-Waiting she was a member of the Royal Household.
This is a great country.
