Shadow Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles commented:
"Incompetence has become a byword for New Labour. It is a sign of the government's desperation that ministers are trying to put a gloss on these figures.
“With the cost of living going through the roof it is disgraceful that hardworking households are having to have bankroll council tax dodgers to the tune of more than 800 million pounds."
