No. 9: Frederick Forsyth

William Kemp writes:

Forsyth_freddie_2 "I would like to nominate the author Frederick Forsyth as a suitable candidate for ennoblement. Leaving aside his literary qualities, he is an intelligent and extremely knowledgeable commentator - especially on foreign affairs and security matters - and his media appearances show a wide knowledge of many other policy areas.

"He served in the RAF and worked as a journalist before embarking on his career as an author. He is a Patron of the Young Britons Foundation, was a supporter of David Davis in the 2005 leadership election and was given the 'One of Us' Award by Conservative Way Forward in 2003.

"He has made several appearances on Question Time and This Week espousing 'conservative' views with a vigour and flair which would be a welcome addition to the House of Lords. I imagine he would also have an independent streak, but this should not disbar him from consideration (I cannot see him as a Minister but as more of a 'maverick backbencher'). I would imagine the main problem would be whether he would have the inclination to do the job or the time to devote to it, but in my view he would be an excellent peer of the realm."
