David Cameron agrees speedy by-election for Henley

David Cameron met with leading members of Henley Conservatives earlier today and agreed a fast process to select a candidate to succeed Boris Johnson as the local MP.

Local Tories will choose from a shortlist of three local councillors in the next week and the by-election may be held on 26th June.

The leader of South Oxfordshire Council, Cllr Ann Ducker, is a strong favourite to be adopted.

Tory tacticians believe that a local woman councillor plus a quick contest represent the best way of defeating the non-local male candidate recently chosen by the Liberal Democrats.

More tomorrow.
