I'm slightly surprised by this result. I was sure dalton would come in the top 4

Phil Bradborn - the MEP so important he has more staff than a Westminster frontbencher.

"Phil Bradborn - the MEP so important he has more staff than a Westminster frontbencher."
I suppose he can afford to seeing as he doesn't employ his wife!
Posted by: Alistair Edwards | March 28, 2008 at 14:54
Congratulations to all candidates and Therese Coffey in particular.

""Phil Bradborn - the MEP so important he has more staff than a Westminster frontbencher."
I suppose he can afford to seeing as he doesn't employ his wife!"
That's because he doesn't have one - he has 7 or 8 members of staff instead!

I've verified West Mids.
Many congratulations to the highly ranked candidates.

Alastair Little????
Will have to meet for a beer as we share the same name.

Jean-Paul Floru 4th in London according to his Facebook profile

COMMENT OVERRIDDEN
Posted by: Veritas | March 28, 2008 at 15:44
What a truly dreadful day for East Midlands Conservatives. I am in despair. Just whan I think the party has got its act together
Posted by: rightwingery | March 28, 2008 at 15:50
Why, rightwingery? Who was your favoured candidate?
Posted by: James | March 28, 2008 at 16:03
Quite frankly, i'm surprsied with the south-east rankings'.
In my opinion Therese Coffey should not have been selected 5th, her information on the ballot paper makes her sound better than real.
The two candidate's i thought most stuck out were:
Richard Robinson
Nina Kaariniemi
Sarah Richardson
Good luck to those candidates when the General comes around.
Posted by: Tom | March 28, 2008 at 16:23
Well done Charles! Delighted you got No. 1 in London rankings.
Posted by: Sally Roberts | March 28, 2008 at 16:37
Is there any way of knowing who *would've* (should've) been placed on the rankings in a free and fair contest (apart from the MEP's who were herded to the top regardless)?
Posted by: BruxInsider | March 28, 2008 at 16:39
My Wales ballot didn't have David Chipp on it. Did Karen Robson pull out?
Congratulations to Kay Swinburne, who with Wales' 1 sitting Tory MEP sitting down is basically assured a seat in the EU Parliament.
Posted by: Adam Johns | March 28, 2008 at 16:52
BruxInsider has a good point. CCHQ should publish a list of how many votes each candidate got.
Posted by: Richard | March 28, 2008 at 16:54
Can anyone verify the Wales result?
Of the four candidates on our ballot papers one of them isn't listed above in the Wales result. In addition someone called David Chipp who wasn't on the ballot is listed.
Posted by: Mark Jones | March 28, 2008 at 17:00
What happened to Bob Seeley in the London MEP selection? Ian Twinn wasn't on my ballot form.
Posted by: James | March 28, 2008 at 17:01
I am very pleased for Tiz Coffee and her ranking in the South East. It is very well deserved. Had not the sitting MEPs been automatically given the top slots I think Tiz would have had a higher ranking still. I have known her since our time in the old CCF in the early 90s. She has stuck with the party through good times, and much more importantly, through bad. Proof that talent and peserverence win through eventually.
Posted by: Conor Burns | March 28, 2008 at 17:05
Adam, Karen certainly didn't pull out but I have no idea who David Chipp is either.
Posted by: Mark Jones | March 28, 2008 at 17:07
Any news from the Yorkshire region?
Posted by: blue moon | March 28, 2008 at 17:16
I thought Helmer wasn't going to give it another go?
Posted by: Neil Martin | March 28, 2008 at 17:20
I'm delighted that Charles came first in London. I didn't see Ian Twinn on my paper, either.
Posted by: Justin Hinchcliffe | March 28, 2008 at 17:27
In previous years candidates have been known to pull out (and be replaced by others) because they weren't happy with a low ranking.
Posted by: John Wilkin | March 28, 2008 at 17:29
What's Ian Twinn's name doing on the ballot? And what happened to Bob Seeley?
Posted by: Woodentop | March 28, 2008 at 17:31
I thought we were a democratic party. Why were the sitting MEPs given a free ride?
Quite disgraceful!!
Posted by: Derek Green | March 28, 2008 at 17:38
The last regions have been added now.

He must be a thick Europhile who can't count. His attack on Therese Coffey was disgusting.

Thanks to Sally and Justin for their kind words of congrats. I too am calling for the release of the turnout and if possible total number of votes cast and spoilt ballot numbers-see my comments on Tim's blog. The Labour party released the number of postal votes cast for each candidate and I do not see any reason why we Tories should be any less transparent!
Posted by: Charles Tannock MEP | March 28, 2008 at 17:53
The North West candidates look very different from the initial ones on the ballot paper....
Well done Alex Williams; if it weren't for shunting a defector in ahead of you, you'd be at least 4th. I wouldn't be surprised if in an open and fair election system you'd have come 3rd.
I didn't vote in these elections though, I must confess, as they were undemocratic and ignored the wishes of the members, especially, I'm afraid, in the North West, where we had to deal with a defectee as well as the completely ludicrous decision to put a woman candidate behind the incumbents in EVERY region.

Where is Fiona Bruce on the NW list?
Posted by: Iain Lindley | March 28, 2008 at 18:31
Just a quick reply to a couple of comments. Yes, Neil, Helmer was going to give it another go. And I am delighted with the East Midlands team. At a meeting today we were talking about press relations, and I was on the point of asking "Everyone here had experience of dealing with press?". But I didn't ask the question, because thinking about it, I realised that everyone had.
We have a team of sound Conservatives, with experience in depth. We have a good mix of women and men, young and old. We're looking forward to the campaign and we're going to do well for the Party and the country.
Posted by: Roger Helmer | March 28, 2008 at 18:50
Yes, Fiona Bruce is missing from the NW list. Any explanation?
Posted by: David Sergeant | March 28, 2008 at 19:01
With so many sitting MEPs surviving this hotch-potch of a selection procedure and a fair few of them still lukewarm to the idea of leaving the EPP, the future of the Conservatives in European Parliament is anything but settled.
Several of the newcomers may have similar sentiments to the old backsliders and when leaving one group and joining another appears 'impractical', the whole proposition of leaving the EPP may become very much an issue once more. Particularly with a very divided Conservative Group lacking a some former key players who held things together.
What's more, once the election is over and the new group is safely installed in Brussels, the Group (or a faction thereof) may feel it safe to take matters into their own hands and play the long game - leaving DC and WH with an embarrassing situation to deal with (yet again).

A few will be very sorry that Mike Dolley did not make the cut above 4 in the South West Rankings. No 4 is in reality a no hope position, as it is more or less fact that the conservatives will achieve three seats, UKIP two and the Liberal Democrats one. Julia and Ashley are certainly in as MEPs, and richly deserved as both are unknown in the area, but received a lot of support from Mid Cornwall, where Officers and Members canvassed heavily.
Mike canvassed and stroked Cornwall heavily, but in mid Cornwall feelings were mixed. There is still hard feelings about the Crossley squabbles which Mike was heavily involved in and got blamed for. Much is being said again about this issue and a former agent, now Officer, Lorrie Eathorne is central to discussions.
It is possible that Cornwall may achieve a miracle and four Conservative MEPs will be elected, but it requires a lot of hard work and unity, which is sadly lacking at the moment. The current series of annual general meetings are a focus of debate on the winning or losing of Cornwall.

Congratulations Vicky! I am thrilled for you.

Re Wales: Who is David Chipp?
Posted by: Dick Wishart | March 28, 2008 at 20:38
I am celebrating that Mike Dolley, a Europhile operative who posed as a sceptic, was placed behind Ashley Fox. Dolley was responsible for the problems in Falmouth and Camborne and used the row to stab Eurosceptics in the back.
BTW, did Bob Seely and Fiona Bruce withdraw after being informed of the results? The last thing we need are bad losers who withdraw to try and get a safe seat in the Commons. Officers and members in Fylde please note!!
Posted by: Sceptic | March 28, 2008 at 20:50
Where is Fiona Bruce in the north west, she was definately on my ballot paper

I'm a big champion of Mike Dolley and have said so here many times. Neither of the two biggest supporters of Gib on the SW list have effectively made the theoretical cut which is a concern to me.
Let's do what you suggest - all work together and make sure the fourth candidate gets elected too.
Posted by: Geoff | March 28, 2008 at 21:17
BruxInsider has raised a very important point - the actual results could show very low support for the women candidates who have done well out of David Cameron's selection policy. If this is the case, Cameron and the Party needs to ask the question - do we want to field the top performers in each region or not? Are we a party that supports meritocracy or not? Cameron would achieve a far higher support level from grassroots tories if he considered the results and used them to hold up his decision or to revoke it and allow the actual votes to count. Do the right thing Cameron! The respect of your own troops is far more valuable than any attempt to win the support of those outside the camp by pretending to be something we are not. Go for quality, nothing else!

Dick,
David Chipp is a businessman who stood for the South East Wales regional list last year for the Conservatives for the Assembly.
The party press release says this about him:
"David Chipp
Occupation: Businessman
Former Assembly election and local government candidate; education includes Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst; former Army officer; served in Northern Ireland and Falklands War; interests include travel, sport, wildlife, keep fit"
Posted by: Evan Price | March 28, 2008 at 22:21
May I thank Tim and all at Conservative Home for the good work you do in promoting Party democracy.
I fully support Charles Tannock (well done Charles for your well deserved result) in calling publicly for at least the number of ballot papers issued and returned in each "Region" to be made public, together with the percentage of spoiled papers.
Can I thank all who voted in the six Eastern Counties and helped me achieve the best ranking a mere man could aspire to....
The real work starts now as the new, formidable Eastern team starts to "Give Europe Flack"
Any offers of help will be gratefully received.
Posted by: John Flack | March 28, 2008 at 22:53
What an awful lay-up. As a floating voter I don't know if any of these lists could attract my support - Hannan top in the SE, after comparing Hans-Gert Poettering to Hitler? Saj Karrim, spitefully, placed 3rd of 3 sitting MEPs in NW?
Sorry - I know y'all don't like me here - but this monomaniac Europhobia is distasteful. It shows your grassroots up for what they really are - nasty little petit bourgeois with no internationalist sense.
Even more reason for for your leadership to take more power away from the crypto-UKIPpers, and have a Clause IV moment which involves stamping on them properly. And if this were extended to Parliamentary selections the better.

Re: East Midlands.
Is that the same George Lee who stood in Leeds North West at the last General Election....?
Posted by: DanP | March 29, 2008 at 00:09
Margaret is hardly worth replying to, but I will anyway. It is the little-minded, inward-looking, protectionist europhiles who see Britain as an off-shore province in Greater Europe. It is the sceptics who recognise that Britain is a great global trading nation, and needs to be engaged with the whole world, and especially the Anglosphere -- not tied preferentially to the one group of developed economies that is in long-term relative decline. This pretence that eurosceptics are not internationalist is risible.
Posted by: Roger Helmer | March 29, 2008 at 08:19
"Sorry - I know y'all don't like me here "
Well, you got something right at last. I'd hate the Conservative Party to attract the support of people like you.
Posted by: Sean Fear | March 29, 2008 at 09:24
Margaret,
It is not that we don't like you, it is that we find it very difficult to respect you when you say things like, "Hannan top in the SE, after comparing Hans-Gert Poettering to Hitler?". Dan did no such thing, as I am sure that you know.
On a wider point, it is tempting now the process is over to again complain about the way in which it was conducted. I was always opposed to the top-listing of incumbents, but that battle was fought and lost. Now we have to work to ensure that as many of our selected candidates as possible are elected next June.
