Bruce Anderson: Labour's class-based campaign in Crewe must not triumph
"It is in Labour's best interests to lose this week's by-election. A number of decent people in the Labour Party – they still exist – are thoroughly dismayed by the tactics adopted in Crewe. They are holding their tongues until the polls close. Then there will be calls for a court of inquiry. But if Labour scrapes home, Gordon Brown will conclude that class hate, smears and lies can work. Anyone who cares about standards in public life should be praying for a crushing Labour defeat." - Bruce Anderson in The Independent

Plan to oust Brown as MPs claim he has lost support - Independent
"It is very difficult to work the Labour constitution so as to depose a leader; Gordon Brown is a tough figure for any challenger to take on. If Crewe is lost, gossip will become more serious. If a challenger emerges who can plausibly offer to help to save their seats, the gossip among Labour MPs will become a real threat to Mr Brown." - William Rees-Mogg in The Times
Quentin Davies' armed forces report published
"The government is expected to back an expansion of the cadet corps in schools and an Armed Forces Day as part of moves to boost support for UK forces. It is due to publish a report by MP Quentin Davies, which recommends more state school pupils are given the chance to join the cadets. An annual Armed Forces Day will also be backed to encourage the public to show their support for the British military." - BBC
Independent readers ask Frank Field about David Cameron
Q What do you see as David Cameron's main weakness?
A We need to take Cameron seriously as a deadly challenger for power. There has been far too much talk that he is mere froth and somehow we can easily blow him away. His main weakness is that, like so many politicians, he hasn't run anything before coming into politics.Q If David Cameron won an election and offered you a job, would you accept?
A We have two years, two weeks, before we have to call the next election and it is within our power to win that. So David Cameron will not be in a position to offer me a job, but thanks for putting the idea in his head.
