GEORGE OSBORNE'S ECONOMY SPEECH
"Shadow Chancellor George Osborne yesterday declared he WAS in favour of tax cuts. But he insisted he would not bow to party colleagues demanding tax promises NOW." - The Sun
The Telegraph leader-writers sense that George Osborne moved a little towards the party's tax-cutters:
"Standing out against the pressure for tax cuts was to be a sign that they had vanquished the forces that were resisting change within the party. But the arguments for lower tax are so compelling, morally and practically, that the leadership's stance on the issue had begun to strike some as more bloody-minded than principled. Mr Osborne has made a sensible move toward reconciling the countervailing forces within his party."
"The shadow Chancellor's speech won immediate support from the Tory grassroots website, conservativehome.blogs.com, which at the weekend produced a poll of Tory activists showing 63 per cent wanted a firm pledge of tax cuts. Tim Montgomerie, a former senior Tory aide who runs the site, said the hint of tax cuts for the family, coupled with the promise of more prisons by the shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, would reassure "core Tory voters"." - The Independent
GOVERNING STYLE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN POLICY DETAIL
"What matters is not such bogus “substance”, it is the governing style of the prospective rulers. Are they strong or weak? Interferers or liberals? Atlanticists or Europhiles? Moderates or extremists? Localisers or centralisers? Tax cutters or big spenders? Tied to vested interests or independent of them? Free traders or protectionists? In touch or out of touch? These are the sort of questions voters should ask. Big emblematic policies — favouring the continuation of the NHS, supporting school vouchers, opposing the Euro and so on — can help, to a certain extent, to provide answers to such questions." - Daniel Finkelstein in The Times
