The outlook for Iraq & Afghanistan

Details: Brigadier James Ellery CBE and Matt Sherman will hold a panel discussion on the Current Outlook in Iraq & Afghanistan with a view to the future. Cash bar, business attire.

Prior to resuming his position on the Board of AEGIS in 2006, James Ellery was for one year Head of the United Nations Mission in Southern Sudan. In 2003 he was seconded by the Foreign Office as a Senior Adviser to the Coalition Provisional Administration (in Baghdad) which administered Iraq during the Occupation. After Transfer of Authority, he set up and ran the 700-strong security framework operation in support of the US-funded Reconstruction of Iraq.

Matt Sherman has had two extended tours in Iraq. From January 2004 through December 2005, under the Coalition Provisional Authority and later the Department of State, Mr. Sherman advised both senior Iraqi and Coalition personnel on non-military security matters relating to the Iraqi Ministry of Interior. More recently as a private contractor from November 2006 until December 2007, Mr. Sherman worked as the political advisor to the First Calvary Division, the military unit in charge of operations throughout Baghdad.

Michael Barone on the US elections

Details: Widely regarded as the world's greatest authority on US politics, Michael Barone is the principal coauthor of The Almanac of American Politics 2008 - which since 1972 has been the main reference work on the subject.  He is a Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and a senior writer for US News & World Report.

Global Philanthropy: Bigger and Better than Ever

Details: Dr. Carol Adelman is the director of the Center for Global Prosperity at the Hudson Institute, and publishes the annual Index of Global Philanthropy, the first comprehensive guide to private philanthropy and remittance flows abroad. She is president of Movers & Shakespeares, a leadership and management training company that instructs corporations, non-profits, government agencies, and business schools.

There has been a vibrant public debate in the UK and European Union about whether or not governments should increase foreign aid in the name of "solving poverty". For the past several years, Dr. Carol Adelman has investigated the incredible scale of global private remittances and philanthropy by organisations and individuals. Her findings challenge many of the fundamental premises used by advocates of government foreign aid.

Manchester CF Summer Ball

Details: It's time for the GMCF Summer Ball to be held, as at Christmas, at the glamorous Malmaison in Manchester City Centre. As always there will be a fantastic 3 course formal dinner and plenty of drinking.

We hope to have a top speaker to make the event even better. There will also be an auction and raffle with some fabulous prizes to win and hopefully raise lots of money to help us turn Greater Manchester blue come the general election. Then after the meal, Manchester is our oyster. There will be an after party somewhere in the city centre. We are doing another auction to raise money for campaigning in Bolton West against Ruth Kelly.

Details: IYDU are delighted to announce that the IYDU Freedom Forum will this year take place in Paris, France.  The Freedom Forum will take place alongside the International Democrat Union Party Leaders’ Meetings.  Details on the agenda for the Freedom Forum will be released at a later date.
