Dan Hannan (whose The Plan I love) - justifying his support of Obama - writes of the Republicans:
"It is becoming, as in pre-Goldwater days, a party of crony capitalism and big federal government, of steel tariffs and federal rules on same-sex marriage, of budget increases and bank nationalisations."
Except McCain supports greater state rights, opposes protectionism, opposes a constitutional ban on gay marriage and promises to veto big budget increases. McCain-Palin want to challenge these unwelcome trends.
Obama believes in all of the things Dan Hannan rightly criticises the Republicans for (he supports a Supreme Court that will impose gay marriage and its own liberal orthodoxies on the nation) and with him ensconced in the White House there'll be nothing to stop a Democrat-controlled House and Senate from initiating a 21st century equivalent of Lyndon Johnson's welfarism.
Hannan praises Obama for "going out of his way to say nice things about Right-wingers". Yeah and he's fooled them all with his warm, empty words. He hasn't worked with the Republicans on any serious issue while in the Senate. In contrast McCain has worked with Democrats on judicial appointments, the environment and campaign finance reform. He hasn't said "nice things" but has done "big things". Real bipartisanship.
It appears that the 'Diana-ification' of UK politics is well advanced. Sentimentality rules.
I have written my own case for McCain for The Telegraph. I hope it will appear tomorrow.
