Watch the Lisbon Treaty pass through the Lords without any real concern. There are very few engaged or thinking peers, they are placed there by the Establishment for the sake of the Establishment, and there will be no proper scrutiny of the European Union (Amendment) Bill. It is true to say that the peers will not be able to change the contents of the Treaty, but it is worth noting, that they would not make any attempt anyway.
If you can be bothered to observe the tragic passing of the Bill, do read the Lords committee reports on the Treaty and its impact which completely supports the Government's case. It will pass through before you can say 'What about a referendum?' or 'What about parliamentary supremacy?' They really will not be interested and they have in any case, always been wholly convinced by the terms offered by the British Establishment - that the UK must be fully absorbed into federal Europe.
To be honest, I wish they'd sack the lot of them - they serve no public purpose and are leeches on the public purse. If there is anything worse than the undemocratic nature of this Treaty, or the undemocratic nature of Brussels, it is the undemocratic national institutions which should have served in the interests of scrutiny, independence and safeguarding the national interest, but have in all cases, done nothing.
As always, I accept that I will be proved wrong. But I doubt it ...
