That's not my view but it is the view of Edward Macmillan-Scott MEP.
The Yorkshire Tory MEP issued this statement:
"In the 34 years Britain has been in the EU no party leader has named a woman as EU Commissioner. Other countries promote women; there are currently 9 women EU Commissioners out a total of 27. This is a feeble UK record."
He made his intervention after speculation that Peter Mandelson may be reappointed by Gordon Brown and after more coverage of David Cameron's controversial "aspiration" for a third of all ministers to be women in a Tory government.
My own preference would be for a Eurosceptic to be appointed to the Commission. I nominate John Redwood.
PS Edward Macmillan-Scott will be on a panel at the Spring Forum in Gateshead to discuss women in politics. For those that are attending, that's Friday, 14th March, MEC Room 9, Katherine Shears Studio, 5.30pm-6.15pm.
