Sarkozy salutes Britain
"France hasn't forgotten, she will never forget that when she was almost annihilated, Britain was at her side. She will never forget the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish blood mixed with the French blood in the mud of the trenches. She will never forget the welcome the British people gave General de Gaulle and Free France. She will never forget the heroic resistance of the British people without which all would have been lost. She will never forget the fine young people who came from all over the British Empire and laid down their lives on the Normandy beaches and in the surrounding bocages. As the last century's wars have shown: like two brothers, what the French people and the British people can accomplish together is far greater than what they can achieve separately."
I couldn't help but notice that Mr Clegg didn't bother to put his headphones on to listen to the translation.
Down right rude if you ask me. Funny the tabloids didn't pick it up!

Margaret, in fairness he speaks fluent French (and several other languages, having a half-Russian father, Dutch mother and Spanish wife he met while studying in Europe).

well he's a show off then... Could still have put his headphones on to fit in.

Oh dear Margaret. Do you really think understanding French is something to conceal so as to fit in?

At least David Cameron had the courtesy to wear his headphones.
He must be able to speak french having attended Eton and being from good stock.
He's just to well mannered!

J'aimerais dire toute simplement que M. Clegg peut parler vraiment bien francais, en effet il parle cinq langue je crois.
Malheureusment M Cameron est nul en Francais et M. Brown est meme plus pire!

Fair play to Mr Sarkozy. However he is still a big fan of the big Europe project and like all French Presidents - it'll be a one way relationship. But the words were nice regardless.
Regardless of which, I'll say thanks but no thanks, I'd rather stick with the yanks!

He certainly talks a good game. But until he commits French forces to Nato, allows reform of the CAP, and opens up French industry to competition from overseas I will continue to view him as I would any other French politician with a wary and sceptical eye.
