Speaking of the Archbishop of Canterbury's recent, deeply unfortunate comments, Douglas asks us in characteristically trenchant style: who will rid us of this embarrassment?
It's more than a rhetorical question, for the method of removing an Archbishop is one not much explored in the modern age (and those who addressed the question before that had answers we would now find unpalatable - unlike many who promulgate Sharia). That situation prompts a further question from me: presuming that someone doesn't "rid us of this embarrassment," where does it leave those of us in the C of E who feel that our beloved church is slipping further and further off the sphere of reality? (Like Conor, I declare an interest - I am a member of the C of E and have been all my life).
I know that what Williams said didn't exactly equate to Sharia Rules OK - as pointed out here in a reasonable piece by Paul Vallely - but the highest priest of my church (though not the head, of course...) has offered succour to a system of "justice" on the shortcomings of which, ultimately, I stand entirely in agreement with Douglas's comments - which were so punchy that I'm just going to have to link to them again.
