Some years ago, I was at university with Johann Hari. It's right to say that our politics were *rather* different then, and they remain so now. He's not always been very nice about me. Nevertheless, I find that there is much to be said for his article in today's Indy - Rowan Williams has shown us one thing - multiculturalism must be abandoned. Therein, he gives several examples of the deep unpleasantness of Sharia, and writes:
These courts highlight in their purest form the problem with multiculturalism. It has become a feel-good doctrine mindlessly celebrating "difference", without looking at what that difference actually means.
Which I think is spot on.
Needless to say, we continue to disagree on much, even within this article - I do profoundly hope that the Church of England isn't "dying" and I rather resent the casual assertion that it is; and his mischaracterisation of both Powell and Tebbit is nothing but an example of typical leftist straw man writing - but nevertheless, as they say in the blogosphere, and as I now find myself saying about a Johann Hari article, rather to my surprise, you should read the whole thing.
