The I Want a Referendum Campaign (IWAR) is tomorrow (Wednesday 6th Feb) launching its Hammersmith constituency referendum on the EU Constitution/ Treaty. IWAR is choosing one constituency from each region, so Hammersmith is the only area of London that will be voting on the new Treaty, unless the Government or the Liberal Democrats change their minds and allow the whole country a referendum.
Ten of thousands of Hammersmith residents will wake up tomorrow or the day after with a ballot paper to return, as organised by IWAR, which is part of Open Europe. To learn more about the local referendum, see the dedicated website/ blog.
Tomorrow's cross-party launch will feature me, Hammersmith candidate Shaun Bailey and MEP Charles Tannock, as well as the Chairman of Open Europe, Derek Scott, formerly Tony Blair's chief economic adviser. For more information about the launch, contact me at greg@greghands.com
The new Hammersmith constituency - which takes in half of my current constituency of Hammersmith & Fulham - will be a key marginal at the next election, with Shaun Bailey as our candidate against the current Labour MP for Ealing Acton, who is reneging on his pledge to allow a referendum on the Constitution. Shaun, by contrast, is committed to giving the people of Hammersmith a vote on the Treaty.
Labour and LibDem MPs are getting very wound up by these local referendums - which may be our best chance of getting a real nationwide ballot, as all the main parties promised at the last election. The Hammersmith referendum will be one to watch.
