In response to the conviction of Steve Wright, Miss Nicol's family said: "These crimes deserve the ultimate punishment and that can only mean one thing." It adds: "The public must insist that this government look at returning the death penalty for cases such as this, otherwise many more families will go through the same suffering that we have had to endure."
The last YouGov poll two years ago showed 49% wanted to restore the death penalty - given the don't knows this still meant a majority. The opinion among Labour voters was pretty evenly divided. But among Labour MPs don't know of a single one who favours the return of capital punishment.
